Thahid - Lip Sync Tutorial

In class we were given a tutorial on how to create lip sync in a video. The task of lip syncin a sample video was then carried out using the software 'final cut pro'. Tools were used which helped keep clips in sync with the sound wave. This task helped me familiarise with the software final cut pro and get the hang of using all its tools and learn how to use basic features. at the end of this task i had a finished lip sync music video which was perfectly in-sync. This task was very useful as it will help with the editing procedure of creating the music video.

Thahid - Final Song Choice

The final song choice is 'Run' by snow patrol. This song already has a existing music video which does not relate to the lyrics whereas, as a group we decided to communicate the video with the lyrics. Our video will be representing indie-rock genre. This will be achieved by focussing on mise en scene, giving our artist a leather/silk coat and rugged facial hair which is usually seen through out indie-rock genre videos. Different Shot types and medium paced cuts will be used which i think will be effective in pursueing an idie-rock genre video.

Thahid - Analysis Of Previous Video

This music video from previous years students has been produced to a very high standard, which almost seems to be produced by professionals. This video cuts in to the category of indie-rock genre, as it is clearly represented in the video through sound and mise en scene. In terms of Goodwin's theory this video would fall under the 'amplification' category.

The editing includes alot of medium paced cuts which allows the video to flow. There are a variety of shots used such as, extreme long shots, medium shots and close ups.

Final Song Choice - BEKTAS [Planning]

'Run' by Snow Patrol already has a music video attached, so we have to be careful not to imitate the original artists' video. The original video does not follow the lyrics of the video to an extent (disjuncture), therefore the group decided to follow the lyrics in our project and provide an illustrated video. Our video will be representative of the indie-rock genre, but not of the existing video.

Our artist will stick to some of the conventions of an indie rock video, such as the costumes. Most artists' in indie rock videos have a very distinctive costume set up, casual clothes also sometimes a slightly rugged look is achieved. Dark or natural lighted places will also be used, as they are in most indie rock videos and also the cuts/editing will be slow paced and many extreme/close ups will be used of our artist. I believe all of these overall will contribute to a very good music video which will give out an very indie rock feel.

[Task 9] Final choice: Snow Patrol, Run - Mehmet Tarhan

This is our groups final choice for the our A2 coursework. It is called Run, created by Snow Patrol. We aim to make our video more distinctive and distinguished from the one posted above. In my opinion, considering Goodwins theory, this version of the music video is somewhat illustrative. Where the lyrics and visuals have a similar link and meaning. Our groups aim is turn this video into an amplification type music video, which I believe is more than doable. Our video will be set in the day time, have scenes filmed in the canal (Regents Canal) and a park (Barnard Park). But by far the biggest difference is that we show the woman the lead singer is talking about, but keep her mysterious and unidentified. The song talks about the singer having to leave, make a journey, and that their relationship would not work out anymore. In our version, it will be the woman he is talking about leaving, and another key difference is that we will film footage with her inside a London Black Cab, which to me, sends out iconography of a journey, and the colour black itself, brings conclusions that the topic is bleak and that the future does not look bright.

[Task 10] A Profile of the Audience We Aim to Market to - Mehmet Tarhan

This is a brief picture summary of our audience, it shows some of the things they like to eat, where they shop, what they read, what gadgets they use, the things they watch, and how the social networking sites they are in to. I think it shows the personality of the audience, it shows they are in to music, they watch Never Mind the Buzzcocks, and go to Orange Rockcorps concerts, as well as reading Q Magazine to stay up to the latest trends in music, as well as the use of social networking to keep them informed.

Lip synch tutorial

I had a lesson on how to lip synch videos and i found it really useful because i learnt how to be extra accurate in editing the video on final cut.
The most challenging thing was getting the lip synch right because it had to go in time with the song i found it quite tricky at first but once you get the hang of it its quite simple.
In final cut pro i learnt how to use the razor blade tool where you can cut out bits of the video.

compared to editing in thrillers music videos seems harder because it has to be accurate and any mistakes will show wheras in our thriller you could get away with minor mistakes

Andrew Goodwin's theory on music

Andrew Goodwin feels that traditional narrative analyses don't really apply to pop videos, the reasons for the different narattive structures are as follows:
  • Pop videos are built around songs- and often songs do not pose traditional narrative structures.
  • The pop video uses the singer both as narrator and as a character.
  • The singer often looks directly at the camera- this is an extension of perfomance and trying to involve the viewer at home with the performance.
Pop videos also rely on alot of repitition, often the video repeats images in the way the song repeats choruses or lines.

Some videos are autonamous from the music they sprang from. The visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning . Sometimes the video provides a visual pleasure that encourages repeated viewing which therefore promotes the music. Sometimes the videos might be promoting other commodites such as films.
Therefore it can be said that there are three types of relations between songs and videos :

  • Illustration: this is where the video tells the story of the song [Skepta-bad boy]

  • Amplification: occurs where the video introduces new meanings that do not contadict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning. [wham-last christmas]

  • Disjuncture: this is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyric.[Red hot chillie peppers-can't stop]

[Task 7] Reviewing Previous Student Work - Mehmet Tarhan

From the start of the year, we've looked and researched professional, well-known artist's music videos for ideas and inspiration, recently, we looked at the work that the year before us had produced.

The lesson was interesting, and it proved fruitful as some of the ideas we wanted to use for our music video had been successfully incorporated in some of the videos from the previous year, things like cross-fades, and match-cuts. There was a high standard throughout, and watching the videos was an enjoyable experience, knowing that ours might be shown to the year below us in the future.

One in particular caught my eye out of the others, it was Adam, Lisa, Nasima and Sayvita's take on VV Brown's - Everybody. I thought it was an exceptional piece of work.

The music and the lyrical tempo of the original is very fast, and I think that the group had taken that into account when filming and storyboarding. The footage is shot in a variety of different angles, and to match the beat of the music, all the footage is edited appropriately into very fast and short, but precise, shots.

They captured the message of the song, that "Everybody needs love", and they shot videos of different people all holding up a pre-prepared piece of writing that sends the message across, and I thought it was a great touch that everybody from a group of girls, to even police officers on duty were smiling and genuinely enjoying being filmed, which adds to the feeling of love. It also shows they had a wide range of people, and not just the same types of people.

It is obvious to me that they spent quite possibly a large proportion of their time in post-production editing, and for good effect too! The added feature of having the music video in black and white, which challenges the norms and conventions of most music videos today, and also is rarely seen as a debut album cover for a new artist, they are pushing the boundaries, and I thought it worked really well. Especially fading out all colours except the Red, seen on the artists lips, on the writing on the papers held by the public. Red gives connotations of care, and amply, love, which is befitting for this piece of work.

Analysis of Previous Student Video - BEKTAS [Research]

This music video from previous years students is a very good, professional looking video. Rather than challenging the conventions of the indie-rock genre, it engages and embraces them. It is also very clear from the video that the genre represented is indie-rock. For example, the clothing of the artist. The costumes are very indie looking and go well with the overall indie feel of the video.

The music video attempts to (and achieves exceptionally) to follow the narrative of the lyrics. In terms of Goodwin's theory this video would fall under the 'amplification' category. The story is of two lovers, but follows one of them as he struggles with the separation. This is a very conventional method of a love song across many genres.

The editing of the video was executed to a very high level. The cuts are medium paced which allows the video to flow. Various shot types are used, such as close-ups, mid-shots and long-shots (extreme long-
shots are also used). The home shot footage in the video adds another layer of meaning to the narrative and adds more emotions to a already very emotional video. Post production aspects such as the multi-layered video tracks, also make it very effective, as shown on above.

[Task 6 Part 2] Applying Propp's Theory - Mehmet Tarhan

Finding a music video that incorporates all members of the character theory developed by Propp is difficult in the music video environment, as the theory was developed from folk tales, and is conventionally associated with movies, but I believe this video makes use of at least 3 important members of the theory. Arguably the most important. They are the Hero, Princess/Prize, Villain.

The music video is, amply, Hero - by Enrique Iglesias.

The Hero - Enrique Iglesias. He is desperately in love with the Princess, the girl in the video. He wants to be together with her, and the video suggests they have a bright future, he tries to win her over in a fight. He fails, but in the end, we see them together again as he passes away.

The Villain - The dark-suited figure, whom the Hero fights with over a quarrel, gets his revenge, and his resources are many henchmen.

The Princess - Woman dressed in white, wants to be with the Hero.

[Task 6] Who Was Vladimir Propp? - Mehmet Tarhan

Vladimir Propp, born on 17th April 1895 in St. Petersburg, Russia, was a professor of Russian and German philosophy. He had attended St. Petersburg University while studying for his degree. He made one of the biggest the contributions to an important part of media. He analysed over 100 Russian folklore tales, and developed his character and narrative structure theory. Propp died on the 22nd August 1970. The theories he developed many years ago focussing on many folk tales, are today applied to many big screen films, and more recently, to music videos.

                                                 Vladimir Propp

Propp’s character theory focussed on 7 pivotal roles within a narrative.
1- The Hero – In search of something, he could be in search of a lost family member, or more conventionally a ‘Princess’, a girl with whom he is deeply in love with that will make him happy. Usually has nothing in the beginning, but ends up in good fortune at the end.

·         2-  The Princess – The person who the Hero usually longs for. Could be fought for during the narrative. Usually from a wealthy family, makes the Hero believe he has no chance of ruing the Princess because of the lack of his assets and material possessions.

·          3-   The Villain – Struggles against the Hero, tries to ruin his plans, gets in his way and makes it hard for him to achieve his goals, usually after the Princess also, even if she does not want him. Has many resources, and tries to utilise them in his plans.

·         4-   The Donor – Helps the Hero in his quest, could give him important information or an object that will enable him to get past an obstacle.

·          5-  The Helper – Supports the Hero, near his side during most of the narrative. The Helper and the Hero may have an argument at some point in the narrative, but they are together by the end of the story.

·          6-   The Father – Father of the Princess. Believes the Princess should marry/be together with, a man of equal stature to himself, wants his daughter to marry a man with a fortune, and so overlooks the Hero, someone whom the daughter may be happier with.

7- The Dispatcher – As the name suggests, dispatches the Hero on his quest, sends him on his way and gives the Hero basic knowledge.
